St Columb Major hurling is an ancient, rough medieval team game played annually in Cornwall.
Two unlimited teams—the “Townsmen” and the “Countrymen”—wrestle and carry a silver-coated applewood ball across the 17-square-mile parish.
Matches occur on Shrove Tuesday and the second Saturday after.
Preserved locally through the St Columb Major community web site, it stands alongside St Ives as one of the last surviving traditional hurling practices in Cornwall. The citizens who enjoy an occasional drink will be reminded of this tradition by the popular town centre pub, “The Silver Ball”.
