SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER
Seasonal affective disorder, commonly referred to as “SAD” slowly gained acceptance during the 1980s.
The condition was primarily investigated to explain the numbers of people suffering depression and elevated suicide figures during the dark days of northern hemisphere winters.
Thanks to the work of Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D., and his associates at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), this condition is now recognised as mental health problem and various treatments are available.
Rosenthal was initially motivated by his desire to discover the cause of his own experience of depression during the dark days of the northern US winter. He theorized that the reduction in available natural light during winter was the cause.
