HELPING A CHILD WITH READING
Establishing the routine of reading a bedtime story to children cultivates a love of books and builds a loving relationship with parents, when the child can enjoy undivided attention.
Over time, children relate the story to the illustrations and from there, they recognise that the parent is interpreting the letters on the page which represent the story.
At this level of development, which varies with every child, curiosity will lead them to ask questions about reading.
It is important that parents introduce reading in the same way a child will be taught when they go to school. Most schools use the Phonic method, which introduces the alphabet in the way that it is sounds when reading words.
Unfortunately, many of the “early reading” books used in schools, lack the stories and illustrations which captivate the imagination of young children who have been entertained by children’s TV and video games.
Usborne have been publishing books for children for over 25 years and know what children enjoy.
“My First Phonics Reading Library”, a 20 book box set from Usborne is filled with beautiful illustrations and stories that children will want to hear over-and-over again. They have been described as, “They are supremely silly or funny and rhyme. The rhyming helps him anticipate words and to sound them out based on what he already knows. Mostly, though, unlike a lot of early readers with zero plot, these have suspense and plots twists that are perfect for preschoolers and early elementary kids. He laughs so much when we read these stories, even though I point to each word as we go, which can be a bit of a story buzz kill. Some of the characters reappear across the books, too, which adds to the interest. A good number of these books also have a duck that’s similar to Richard Scarry’s goldbug that children (and adults) can hunt for on each page. The duck hunt adds to the fun. The pages are thick and some books have fold outs, which are great if your child has busy hands, like mine. My son also loves the box and plays books shop with them (inspired by the picture book Dog Loves Books.) Of course, every child eventually learns how to read no matter how much early pressure schools put on kids, but we have wanted to raise a reader who is passionate about books. So many early readers, in my opinion, turn kids off of reading. They’re work. But this collection is the kind with which children won’t notice the very .”
I was so impressed by the review written by an Amazon customer in the US, that I was compelled to add this story of a child overcoming his initial struggle to master reading, to reassure all parents who fear their child is lagging behind his classmates.
