Two Weeks Until We Depart For Las Vegas

Call me a control freak and I totally agree with you.

I’m trying to behave like a sensible adult and contain my excitement at the endless possibilities of Las Vegas, The Grand Canyon and the Spring Mountains.

We’re now down to just two weeks until we depart from Gatwick so I have now ordered the suitcase I hope will be the most suitable for me.  I know I won’t be able to pack everything I want to take into my hold luggage suitcase.  I do have a generous 23kg allowance, but my shoes will pile on the pounds, or kilos.

I have another very generous baggage allowance in my cabin baggage which is 56 x 45 x 25cm, so I will take advantage of this to give me more space.

I’m not being greedy or obsessive.  I am packing for three different environments and climates: obviously the temperatures outside in Las Vegas are predicted to be in the upper thirties centigrade during the day and about ten degrees cooler during the evenings.

For everyone who has this dilemma of keeping within the 23kg weight limit on their suitcase, I advise taking a look at this video from Travel Tips by Laurie (

Laurie has been blogging her travel tips for years and has an enormous following so her tips have been helping us ladies to travel without fuss, with great success.

When we’re in casinos or restaurants, the temperatures regulated by air conditioning are likely to be in the lower twenties, both day and night.

Then there is my absolute favourite adventure;  a night out on the Spring Mountains, watching the sunset, then we will be star-gazing for around two to three hours.  They give us firewood and the means to safely light a fire to keep us warm and toast some marshmallows, so we will not freeze to death on the mountain in temperatures which are likely to be around ten or less degrees centigrade and I don’t do well in low temperatures so I will be wrapped up in thermal tops, gloves and a scarf.  I will also be wearing my stout boots with thick socks to keep my tootsies toasty.

FLYMAX 32” Extra Large Lightweight Suitcase. Expandable Hold Check in Travel Bag on Wheels RED 129L. It cost £54.99 which I feel is very reasonable and the reviews are mostly very positive about it’s strength and durability to withstand the manhandling, into and out of the plane’s hold.

I chose red following the advice of Laurie (@traveltipsbylaurie) on Instagram.  Identifying my suitcase on the carousel when we arrive should help with it’s bright red colour.  I have in the past taken a suitcase off the carousel which was identical to mine, but on closer inspection I realised it belonged to the man who was waving furiously at me a little further around the carousel.

What an embarrassing start to my holiday, and I’d rather not repeat that experience.  I just hope not everyone on my flight is a follower of Laurie, or we’ll all be fighting over the red suitcases.

Pink Cabin Bag

I’ve chosen this pink Cabin Bag 56x45x25 which will hold 40L of luggage, whatever that means.  Fortunately they do a handy graphic explaining the number of t-shirts, trousers, shoes etc, it will contain, along with pockets for toiletries, my binoculars, various gadgets and other bits and pieces.  I am hoping it will double as a poolside bag for wet costumes and towels etc.  It is only £18.99 and I have gone for the pink in the hope that it will match my pink blazer I will be wearing. https://amzn.to/45vHsi5

You may wonder why I didn’t choose the cabin size Flymax suitcase, to match my hold extra large suitcase; I thought that a travel bag is more versatile than a suitcase for use on my night out on Mount Charleston and as I’ve already mentioned, a poolside bag for my swimming costumes, a drink when I want to economise rather than order drinks from the poolside bar, a book to read and my phone, purse, flip-flops; perhaps I should have chosen the suitcase!!!

In order to keep to the 23kg limit, I have also ordered a set of bathroom scales to weigh the shoes in particular and of course my clothing so that I can spread the load between my suitcase and travel bag.  https://amzn.to/4orXEcJ

I’ve chosen the HomeFashion HFitness bathroom scales, partly because the platform is slightly larger than some of the other cheap options at 28x28cm for weighing shoes etc. rather than the conventional purpose of weighing myself.

Another plus is the price, £8.99.  They offer all the functions offered by more expensive sets and I am not planning to become a regular user of bathroom scales, unless I over-indulge on the vast range of international foods on offer 24 hours per day.  There are many tempting menus on offer, but I’m not normally a great foodie. Anyway, I will be restricted by the fit of my clothes unless I have to buy a whole new wardrobe to accommodate a big fat bum and tum.

I will keep you posted on my opinion of the luggage I have chosen and all the other holiday clothes and accessories I’ve ordered.

I hope that it will help you to decide what luggage will suit you best for your holiday.

Weather for September

The average temperature in September is a very warm 36°C, which is perfect if you want to top up your tan and spend a lot of time outdoors. When evening approaches, you might experience a slight temperature drop, but this rarely falls lower than 24°C. Only 7mm of rain falls in September and this usually spreads across a period of three wet days. You’ll also get to experience an average of 12 hours of blissful sunshine each day, giving you lots of time to explore the city.
