GIVING YOUR CHILDREN A HOME EDUCATION

The decision of how to educate your children, what that education should consist of, and what the end result of that education should be, rests solely with you, their parent.

In December 2024, the UK Government reported that a record number of children, 111,700 were registered by local authorities as being educated at home.  This was an increase of 92,00 from the autumn of 2023.

There are multiple reasons for parents taking the decision to  educate their children at home.

The following article written by Vanessa Clarke for BBC News is a good insight into the reasons for some parents to take this decision.

Modern life, with credit scoresdecidingour ability to pay rent or a mortgage in order to provide a comfortable, safe and secure home for our family often leads to the necessity for both parents to work to provide an income.  When those jobs compel us to go out to work full time, child-care is a dilemma.  Should a toddler spend their waking hours in the care of a nursery until they are old enough to enter full-time education?

Many of us feel that the development of our children is our duty and would rather not delegate this privilege to others.   Other families would rather leave their children’s development in the hands of qualified persons.

We are faced with a dilemma; should we delegate the care of our children to others in order to provide an income, or tailor our financial situation to the income which allows at least one parent to remain at home with the children.

The end result of this decision will not be evident for many years but if a youngster develops problems later in life, the parents who have devoted personal time and attention can take the position that they cannot blame their child’s problems on anyone other than themselves.

Parents whose children have been raised by professional carers and educators have the excuse that any deficiencies in their children are the fault of the professional people whose job it was to educate their children.

The award-winning American educator, John Taylor Gatto, (1935-2018), taught in American schools for 30 years, but after retirement wrote many books and essays critical of indoctrination and grooming inherent in the mass schooling systems of most western societies.

“In a home school, the child does 95% of the work.  In the school system, a teacher has to do 95% of the work.”

Bringing children into the world gives us a lifetime of responsibility for the people we entrust with the future development of mankind.
